Mind of an Entrepreneur

A couple of my friends and readers emailed me out of curiosity, how easy is it to make your own business? how do you start it up? So today I want to share with you what I think creating your own business is.

Many or perhaps most of you know that my friends and I just built a new online retail store that sells fashion accessories or jewelry called Micha (Micha Store). It is currently in the initial stage of growth. Prior to building this business I have had several businesses back in Jakarta and a small clothing store (online) in the U.S. Everyday, my mind is constantly passed by ideas: business ideas, development ideas, and it's been always entrepreneurship that drives it. The point is: I have always wanted to have my own business. period. Not that I say my current business is successful already.. of course not! But I would like to encourage all of you to do and try to do what you love.

If you really want to learn and I mean learn a lot. I'd suggest look for a partner or friend. My friend, Intan, approached me a couple of months back. She invited me to build an online fashion store. Then more people joined us. What I found is, I learned a lot from them in their own specialties: Intan has been managing jewelry online store since last year; so she knows a lot about the customers and the market. Hilda is no question a fashionista, I learned so much from her how to style things correctly and trendily. Maria is da bomb: she produces most of the pictures and materials in Micha. Revel is pretty much similar like me, we normally throw out ideas out to the team. I learned different things I really never knew.

Second of all. Stop talking about it.. start doing it. Once you know what you are planning to do or have, plan out your customers and media, then you need to stop dreaming about it. Start to do it. As simple as that. Try to make your first business not as risky, try online shops! try investing on small amounts of inventory.

Lastly, build it up. Create a store image and make sure you are talking to the customers. Ask them what they like the most and what they like the least. Even though your store is an online store, you do have ways to talk to them. Read! Read as many articles about your market, start up business, and what people like. It will help you grow your business.

Really the key is to love it. When you love it, you have no problem spending your weekend working on the business. It's not only a place for you to learn, to get income, but it's also a place where you express your hobby and interest. It's an all in one. Start to do it! And share with us how you feel, don't be afraid and trust yourself!

Love,

Catherine.
